Artist’s Statement

Lisa Blaylock

I love to create.  I am really attracted to thought-provoking compositions in nature that inspire an observer to think through my creative expressions.  I am especially drawn to junkyards and rustic barns in abandoned fields of wheat.  I love seeing strength in nature, for instance a weed heartily growing out of concrete.

Watercolor is quick and I am quick!  I love the unexpected results while working wet to wet.  Each brush stroke gives me an opportunity to further explore with color, expressions of emotions. The simplicity of working with just paint, water, brush and paper gives me freedom from the noise of cell phones, technology, and the fast paced life.

I begin a piece by really considering what it is that is drawing me to the subject; is it the colors, the subject, the composition or what it is conveying.  I know a piece is done when I am pleased with it and I don’t feel the need to fix it.  A few paintings I’ve started I felt the need to "fix something" all the way through; whereas some feel like music or a continuous stream of creativity.

When people see my work, I’d like them to feel engaged, to stay a moment longer and to be uplifted.
