2011 Award Winners |
1st Place ($500) - Urban Kabuki by Kathy Mitchell Juror’s Comments: “This is an unusual abstraction of a subject with a very strong feeling of motion. It is a good division of space and wonderful and consistent use of color and resist throughout the work.” |
2nd Place ($300) - Group Therapy by Michael Rogan Juror’s Comments: “With it's softened edges and good paint handling, this work transcends photographic still life and is very painterly with good drawing. Wandering visually through the objects depicted brings additional surprises. The painting is fascinating to study.” |
3rd Place ($200) - Red Abstract by Jan Prevetti Juror’s Comments:“The diagonal patterns, counter thrust, use of a variety of textures and shapes in this work are intriguing. The choice of colors is excellent.” |
Honorable Mention ($100) - Approaching Storm by Frances Fisher Juror’s comments: “The use of materials, technique and both hard and soft edges is consistent throughout the painting. The artist successfully creates a mood and transmits it to the viewer.'" |
Emerging Artist ($100) - Morning in Granada by Anuradha Khandekar Juror's comments: “A wonderful example of the flowing ability of the watercolor medium. There is a good choice of color and the use of loose calligraphy to indicate the ornate building shapes is successful.” |
Beyond the Surface (Complete set of Watercolor paints, donated by M. Graham) - Stray by Peter Carey Juror’s Comments: “Beyond the very well done drawing and rendering, this painting sets you thinking about the meaning behind the work and creates a feeling of empathy or concern as the category implies. Technique wise, the strong value contrast and good composition attract the viewer's attention.” |

Picture Element ($150) - Shaped by Water #1 by Rajani Balaram Juror’s Comment: “This is outstanding for being a traditional landcape painter's division of horizontal space, but otherwise, the color and supplementary forms seem very abstract, almost non-objective.” |
Picture Element ($150) - Sunny Spot For A Lazy Cat by Susan Gough Jurors Comment: “The fur is beautifully rendered, the background is soft and the shadows on the lower right third of the figure blend into the background just wonderfully. There is a good combination of hard & soft edges throughout the painting and of contrast and merging values.” |
Quiller Gallery ($100) - Got Milk by Nancy Wulff Juror’s Comment: “This piece is beautifully drawn and painted.” |
University Art ($100) - Gateway by Don Wieland Juror’s Comment: “This carefully drawn picture caught my attention as I came into the gallery. The value contrasts are great and the larger value pattern is well planned. Up close, every piece is beautifully drawn and rendered but the overall presentation holds together very well.” |
University Art ($100) - Shopping Day by Belinda Lima Juror's Comment: “A really well designed piece. Good dark/light pattern and shape placement. The collage makes me think about the nature of watermedia on paper.” |
Accents Arts ($75) - His Guiding Hand by Cleo Crouch Juror's Comment: “A very well painted work. The figure of the horse and riders merges nicely with the background shadows.” |
Creative Catalyst ($60) - Roy, the Motorcycle Messenger by Stewert Weinberg Juror's Comment: “This is a lovely and well drawn picture. This painting takes advantage of the flow and color mixing that the watercolor medium can do." |
Creative Catalyst ($60) - Pink Vase by Jane Ferguson Juror's Comment: “This picture introduces another calligraphic element into the exhibit. The loose washes are great and I like the lost and found edges.” |
Union Avenue Framing ($50) - I will protect all by Uma Kelkar Juror's Comment: “This painting takes advantage of the flow and color mixing that the watercolor medium can do." |
Cheap Joes ($100 + goody bag) - Cherry Blossom in the Bonsai Garden by Jerry Carpenter Juror's Comment: “Strong presentation and beautifully painted. The colors are delightful" |
Art and Frame Unlimited ($50) - Lake Merced by Kristi Miller Juror's Comment: “This is a delightful and very loose and wet watercolor and that it is on canvas makes it interesting.” |
