Juror's comments:
All of the artists in this show should be very proud of the amazing paintings presented here. There is such variety in the use of the media, the use of color and range of subject matter. It was a great pleasure to spend time with each of the paintings. Each one is a kind of window into the sensibility of that artist. I was impressed by the scale and mastery of the media in so many of them. From melting ice cream to ghosts in a mirror the show has something for everyone to contemplate and enjoy.

Judge's Favorite ($400 Cheap Joe Gift Certificate) Blue Room Juror's Comments: I enjoy the playful awkwardness in the figure and the perspective. The composition has so many elements that give the viewer ways to move through the composition but especially the variety of stripes. |
Picture Elements ($150 gift certificate) Gallery of Maps Juror's Comments: The drawing in this painting is remarkable, complicated and beautifully executed. I like the way the details are held together in masses of warm and cool color. |
Picture Elements ($150 gift certificate) Explosion Juror's Comments: The contrast in this painting is striking in both the use of the complimentary color and the bright hues against the dark ground. It really lets the color explode. |
University Arts ($100 gift certificate) Moonrise Over Grand Canyon Juror's Comments: The mood in this painting is given mystery through the dark hues and open and masterful use of washes. |
University Arts ($100 gift certificate) Raspberry, Blueberry Popsicle Juror's Comments: Sweet delicious color used to express soft melting ice cream, clearly solid blueberries and seedy raspberries brings a moment to savor in this well executed still life. |
Tony Baxter Framing ($75 gift certificate) Going, Going Gone...? Juror's Comments: The use of cool colors and controlled washes to express the solidity of the ice, movement in the water and space in the sky are beautifully done. |
Living in Color - Terri Hill Book Going to Coit Juror's Comments: This painting has a complicated composition of architecture and light. The blocking of the shadows against the lit buildings and the backs of the figures creates an inviting space for the viewer to walk into. |
Creative Catalyst (DVD gift certificate) Reflections on a Snowy River Juror's Comments: The intense blue in the river sits perfectly in the center of the composition giving life to the cold contrasting black and white of the winter scene. |
Creative Catalyst (DVD gift certificate) Winter in Yellowstone Juror's Comments: The use of complimentary color to bring warm light to a winter scene strikes a beautiful balance along with soft transparencies in the washes. |
