Mastering the Urban Landscape

""St Giles Edinburgh""
by Iain Stewart

2022 Iain Stewart - In Person
Mastering the Urban Landscape

UPDATE: REDUCED PRICE! THIS WORKSHOP WILL BE HELD AT HOOVER THEATRE

In his third workshop with the SCVWS Iain will bring to bear his considerable experience as an urban watercolorist and build on the skills taught at his two previous workshops. The focus of this course is breaking down the conventional ideas of the use of perspective and form to allow you to find your own unique voice in your painting journey. In the past Iain has taught the foundations of his painting theory and this course is designed to move to a more advanced understanding of how to paint architectural subjects.

Students will be encouraged to work from their own reference photography. Iain will demonstrate daily and then allow the students to work with his guidance on their own compositions. In his 27 year career as an architectural illustrator and watercolorist Iain has found a clear way to focus in on what he wants to say in his paintings and how to gather reference imagery, plan a lighting schematic, edit an advanced scene, and finally put all that information in to one powerful statement.

Painting Vibrant Flowers & Foliage with Depth and Realism

""Orange Hibiscus""
by Kathleen Alexander

2022 Kathleen Alexander - In Person
Painting Vibrant Flowers & Foliage with Depth and Realism

NOTE: THIS WORKSHOP IS IN PERSON AT THE HOOVER THEATRE

Students will learn to paint realistic watercolors, usually by establishing the shadows first, and building upon that framework. Working wet into wet, one shape at a time in order to control edges, the Instructor will show you how to apply a lot of juicy paint to achieve saturated color. You will learn how to use contrast between the areas in sunlight and those in shadow to create drama and realism.

This workshop will cover how to layer transparent colors to create depth and realism, how to select a good photo reference, and a brief description of the use of Adobe Photoshop to merge photos for a better composition. Techniques for pulling the focal point forward and pushing the rest into the background, as well as how to paint foliage, will also be covered. Everyone will work on the same project in order to learn the techniques covered, and the instructor will provide the reference.

Watercolor Wet & Wild!

""Pink" by Karen Knutson"

2022 Karen Knutson - Online Only
Watercolor Wet & Wild!

NOTE: THIS IS AN ONLINE "LIVE" STREAM WORKSHOP

Get ready to paint juicy, wet beginnings and then add detail with a process called Wire Drawing.  I named it “wire drawing” because the drawing resembles a wire sculpture.  These are done with permanent markers.  Subjects can vary widely according to the artists’ preferences.  Good examples are birds, fish, people with long hair, abstracts, still life settings, machinery, gears that remind you of steampunk art, etc. Color lessons and lots of design tips make this a win/win workshop!  Limited collage will add texture to the painting.  All in all, this workshop will improve your design skills and imagination. Karen believes that art should be fun and easy. Karen Knutson is a very popular instructor who teaches workshops nationally.
